Dr Jackie McRae is clinical academic Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) with over 30 years’ experience working with adults with acquired swallowing (dysphagia) and communication impairments in specialist and general critical care units in and around London. She has experience of managing patients with a range of complex conditions including cardiothoracic surgery, heart and lung transplants, neurosurgery, spinal cord injury and more recently, Covid-19.
After 12 years of working in a Spinal Cord Injury Unit, she found little evidence to support her clinical work and was awarded a doctoral fellowship to investigate further. Her PhD focused on optimising the identification and management of dysphagia in acute cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) patients, capturing staff opinions and patient voice on the experience. She developed a SCI-specific dysphagia screening tool and best practice recommendations for optimising swallowing, nutrition, respiratory function and communication in this patient group. She has published and presented her work at national and international conferences and promotes collaborative team working to ensure best outcomes. Following her PhD, she took up an academic research lead role and now splits her time between her clinical work, teaching, supervision, mentorship and research.
Jackie is actively involved with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists as a professional advisor, research champion and lead author for guidance documents. She has been a committee member of the Intensive Care Society, Global Tracheostomy Collaborative and World Health Organisation and contributed to national and international guidance. She is an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Language and Communication Disorders and undertakes peer reviews for other journals.
In 2021 she was received a Giving Voice Award for her promotion of the role of SLTs in Covid and in 2022 was awarded a fellowship of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. She recently won awards for her presentations on speech and swallowing impairments in SCI at the 61st International Spinal Cord Society Scientific Meeting (2022) and 8th European Weaning and Rehabilitation Conference (2023). She has an international network of healthcare professionals who share a vision of advancing early rehabilitation for people with complex conditions in critical care.

Senior Lecturer in Orthopaedics Bioengineering
Keele University, the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital Foundation Trust
Dr Wright is a Senior Lecturer in Orthopaedics and Bioengineering at Keele University, based at the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital Foundation Trust. Her laboratory group at the RJAH develops biological therapies for orthopaedic and spinal cord injury patients. Her group’s research transcends the bench to bedside translational pipeline, from in laboratory based science, pre-clinical models, clinical trials and finally NICE approved treatments. They are equally interested in learning from bedside to bench through reverse translational research, by collecting and analysing human cells and tissues and relating biological profiles to clinical outcomes in an effort to refine, tailor and develop novel treatments.
