Cauda Equina Champions Charity was founded by Claire Thornber following her own CES injury. A huge, herniated disc in her lower back compressed the nerves at the base of her spinal cord, leading to permanent, life changing injuries.Â
Her traumatic experience of emergency treatment, followed by a lack of support and services, highlighted the need for a patient support group. From a small Facebook group, the charity has grown with over 5400 members across the world. It is now the leading voice, and only dedicated UK charity for cauda equina syndrome.
Claire heads up the charity and is supported by staff and volunteers whose lives have all been touched by CES.
Living in Lancashire with her family, Claire continues to raise awareness and reaches out to people isolated and unsupported in the community.
With over ten years of experience navigating the CES landscape, she passionately networks and champions cauda equina syndrome, using her expert, medical and related networks to drive real change for patients dealing with the aftermath of a cauda equina injury.
I have worked in an NHS Regional Spinal Injuries Unit for over 20 years as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Rehabilitation Team. This entailed working with patients and families on an inpatient/outpatient basis through the rehabilitation process. To help spinal injury patients adjust to their spinal injury, cope with rehabilitation and the issues that will affect them once they are discharged from the hospital.
I have focused on specific interventions for managing pain, spasms, coping with emotional adjustment issues, any cognitive concerns, trauma and distress following the spinal injury, and concerns about relationships and the future.
Â
I am interested in pain management and co-founded  Yorkshire Pain Clinic @ Leeds with a Consultant Spinal Surgeon.

I have also presented research papers at national and international Spinal Injury conferences.
