In our post Covid world, virtual assessments are being widely promoted.
Join us for a discussion on the particular challenges this poses for brain injured individuals.
We aim to discuss the benefits and the potential difficulties for such assessments as well as the things to think about when these are being proposed, how to plan for them and what to look out for when they are taking place. We will aim to cover a variety of assessments from Capacity to medico legal and therapy.
Biographies:
Claire Howard, Serious Injury Partner, Irwin Mitchell
Claire has specialised in representing Brain Injured clients for over 25 years.
Dr Susan Howell, Speech and Language Therapist
Susan has worked with communication disorders following acquired brain injury since 2004. Her clinical and research experience includes the use of Telehealth technologies for the remote delivery of rehabilitation services.
Dr Richard Maddicks, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist, Psychology Chartered
Richard is a Clinical Neuropsychologist who has specialised in work with adults with acquired brain injury since doctoral qualification 1996. Extensive work in NHS in-patient and community neuro-rehabilitation services shaped a strong interest in multi-disciplinary team working, psychological treatment(s) and family work. This interest underpinned his decision to establish Psychology Chartered, an independent Psychology Service based in Hampshire. He also regularly undertakes neuropsychological assessments for the Courts.
Richard has experienced something of a video technology epiphany during lockdown. Historically, he approached technology with a caution typically reserved for wild animals. However, like many, undertaking clinical work in the last 3 months has forced him to confront his preconceptions, fears and concerns and acknowledge that ‘virtual’ assessment and treatment not only has utility but can potentially be reconciled with a positive client experience.Â
Debbie Eaton, Occupational Therapist and Brain Injury Case ManagerÂ
Debbie provides a brain injury case management service for adults on an independent basis. Her professional time is spent dealing with an active caseload, and she is also a qualified care expert compiling medico-legal reports for solicitors to assist in court cases.
Debbie has provided case management for over 50 clients with varying needs, including those with multi-faceted problems. She has experience in helping clients to move from rehabilitation facilities to their own home and in setting up and managing dedicated care teams for individuals with significant requirements, including case managing complex long-term clients with 24-hour care needs.Â
